Take a machine whose serial sits near the end of one Elizabethport block and the start of the next Anderson block. Both readings are arithmetically possible. The fittings decide it. Fixing a number that will not resolve

The common failure is a serial that falls outside every block. Most of the time it is a misread: a 3 taken for an 8, or a filled curve that looks like a straight line. Read it again under different light, then check the first and last digits against the model's known range.

If it still fits nothing, use the feature-first fallback. Date the machine from its fittings and treat the serial as supporting evidence. Machines sold as Singer were sometimes built by other firms, and a shallow, smooth stamp is a hint.
