Identify before you apply
The three surfaces most often confused are original japanning, later enamel and shellac over wood. They respond very differently to alcohol, to mild alkaline cleaners and to heat. Guessing which one you have is where most irreversible damage begins.
Chemical identification is a real discipline rather than a knack. NIST's Chemical Sciences Division works on chemical measurement science and the reference data that let composition results be compared and trusted. Nobody is analysing a sewing machine head in a national laboratory, but the point holds: a confident guess about a coating is not a measurement, so treat it as provisional and let a coupon test it.
Gloves are a materials choice
The right glove depends on what you are handling. Solvent work needs a glove matched to the chemical, because thin disposable gloves fail quickly against some products. Handling paper wants clean bare hands, and handling photographic material wants nitrile.
The National Archives sets this out explicitly in its guidance on gloves: it advises against cotton or plastic gloves for handling paper records, because gloves catch and tear paper, transfer dirt more quickly and make handling awkward, while photographs and negatives must be handled with nitrile gloves since fingerprints stain them permanently.
For machine work that translates into three habits: bare clean hands for paperwork and inspection, nitrile for photographs and for oily parts, and chemical-rated gloves for anything stronger than soapy water.
Materials to keep out of the workshop entirely
- Household bleach, near anything metal.
- Ammonia-based glass cleaner, near brass or plate.
- Silicone sprays, anywhere near a surface that may later be waxed or painted.
- Superglue, as a general repair adhesive on antique metal.
- Any product decanted into an unlabeled bottle.
The last one causes more accidents than any of the others, because an unlabeled bottle eventually gets used by somebody who assumed it was something else, including you six months later.
Keep original containers, keep the labels legible, and if a product has to be decanted, write the full name and the date on the new container before it leaves your hand.
Test, record, then use

Common questions
Is white spirit safe on japanning? Sometimes, briefly, on a sound surface. Test it, and never leave it standing.
Can I use olive oil or vegetable oil in an emergency? No. Organic oils gum and go rancid inside a mechanism.
What about penetrating oil for a seized machine? Only as a last resort, kept off painted surfaces, and after the head has been assessed.
Do I need a respirator? For occasional small-scale work with ventilation, no. For repeated solvent work, ask before assuming.
