The domestic shortcuts that keep appearing

Each of these circulates as a shortcut. Each removes a plating layer, softens a finish, or introduces a hazard that the workshop version of the job would not.

Why the kitchen is the wrong room

Dishwasher detergents are strongly alkaline and the cycle is hot. That combination attacks aluminum, softens some paints, strips plating and lifts transfers. Ovens do something similar more slowly, and they contaminate a food appliance with whatever was on the part.

If a part genuinely needs a hot wash, that is a workshop process with the right chemistry, done to a part you have already established is bare steel with nothing to lose.

Freezing has the same problem in reverse. Taking a part from a freezer into a warm room puts condensation on every surface at once, including the surfaces you cannot reach to dry, and the rust appears a week later when the connection to the freezer is no longer obvious.

Ventilation and heating

Solvent work in a closed room in winter is where two bad decisions meet: no fresh air, and often a heater brought in to make the space usable. Fuel-burning heaters and generators are the specific danger. The Consumer Product Safety Commission's carbon monoxide information center makes the scale of it plain, noting that a single portable generator produces as much carbon monoxide as hundreds of cars.

The rule is simple and absolute: nothing that burns fuel runs inside a closed workspace, and solvent work happens with a window open or not at all.

Oily rags deserve their reputation

Cloths soaked in some oils and finishing products can generate heat as they cure, and a pile of them holds that heat rather than losing it. This is an ordinary, well-documented ignition path rather than an urban legend, and fire behavior of this kind is exactly the sort of thing studied systematically; NIST maintains a Fire Research Division devoted to fire measurement science and fire safety research.

The domestic control is easy. Lay used rags out flat to dry, or keep them in a closed metal container, and never leave a heap on a bench overnight.

Can I soak parts in the sink? Not in a kitchen sink, and not with anything that goes down a household drain untreated.

Is boiling water safe for degreasing? On bare steel with nothing to lose, sometimes. On anything painted, plated or decalled, no.

How cold is too cold to work? Cold enough that you would want a heater. That is the moment to reschedule rather than improvise.

Where should solvents be stored? Locked, upright, labeled, away from heat, and not in a living space.
